A workshop exploring the life stories of six actors is the basis of the Dunedin Fringe Festival show Life Stories: A Work Showing, which premieres tonight.

Acting teacher and director John Bolton, a Melbourne-based Englishman, brought a three-week workshop to Dunedin which will finish with two performances of short autobiographical pieces at Fortune Theatre tonight and tomorrow.

The "extremely brilliant'' show was created by using the life stories of the six actors taking the workshop, aged between 22 and 54, Mr Bolton said.

The show was "full of life''and he was pleased with his first visit to Dunedin, Mr Bolton said.

"It's been an incredibly fruitful time, it's been lovely to work with these actors and see what comes up.''

Workshop participant Claire Waldron, of Geraldine, said the show was like a factory tour, giving the public an insight to "a performers way of working'' and the process involved.

Workshop participant Cheryl Amos, of Dunedin, said the show was a mixture of solo, duo and group performances.

"It original and fresh . . . it's a life-changing experience.''
