YMCA building housing hospital build workers

Former YMCA apartments on top of a central Dunedin multi-storey carpark have been given a new lease on life as hospital-build workers move in.

The new Dunedin hospital build has been drawing workers from far and wide to the city. However, the enduring problem has been where they will rest after a hard day of work.

Yesterday, the council announced D&H Steel Construction and John Jones Steel had secured the structural steel contract for the build. However, a sticking point for the Auckland- and Christchurch-based companies was a lack of semi-permanent housing for their workers.

So they contacted the council for help.

D&H Steel Construction managing director Wayne Carson said it would be a challenge without the council’s help.

‘‘[The council] were very proactive and extremely helpful.’’

The council helped the two companies find a suitable spot.

They were able to secure the old YMCA apartments located on top of the multi-storey carpark in Moray Pl.

The companies gave them some much-needed repairs and upgrades, as well as a lick of paint, and moved their workers in.

‘‘They guys all love it ... plenty of [hospitality] around, plenty of kitchen units and it is close to the site.

‘‘It’s a great spot.’’
