A police pursuit through central Dunedin ended with a teenager spending last night in custody.
A traffic unit was monitoring motorists in Kaikorai Valley Rd when a car was observed travelling at speed in the 50kmh zone just after 4pm, Acting Senior Sergeant Tania Baron said.
The female driver of the black BMW failed to stop for police, later telling them she did so because her male passenger was wanted on a warrant.
The vehicle was pursued around Corstorphine, where the pair are believed to have changed seats, before driving through South Dunedin, and then later stopped outside the Leviathan Hotel in Cumberland St, due to heavy traffic and a "well-placed police car".
During the low-speed pursuit, the car had struck a parked car, and gone through several red lights, Snr Sgt Baron said.
"Unfortunately, his actions put other motorists at risk, when it could have been simply dealt with on Kaikorai Valley Rd.
"Fortunately, no-one was injured."
The 16-year-old youth was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear in the Youth Court, and was charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, and driving with excess breath-alcohol.
The youth remained in custody last night and was expected to appear in court today.
The 28-year-old female was charged with failing to stop and has been bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week.
