Over 500,000 early votes cast

The Electoral Commission says as of Monday more than 551,000 voters had had their say.

That is not too far short of the 717,579 early votes cast in 2014 and there are still three days to go.

On Monday alone, 105,620 turned out, while 134,947 headed to the polling booths at the weekend.

The commission has estimated as many as 50% of voters could have visited a polling booth before election day on Saturday.

Yesterday, which marked 124 years since women in New Zealand were granted the vote, was expected to be a popular day for early voting.

However, as of Monday more than 350,000 people — 10% of eligible voters — still were not on the roll, the commission said.
