A criminal barrister who helped defend a murderer is now facing serious drugs charges.
Calvin Dean Wootton, 46, appeared at Waitakere District Court today and is charged with supplying methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and cannabis, as well as using methamphetamine.
Wootton has worked as a lawyer for ten years and in 2008 teamed up with disgraced lawyer Chris Comeskey on the Nai Yin Xue murder case.
Xue was later found guilty of murdering his wife and dumping her body in the boot of a car before fleeing the country with his three year-old daughter and abandoning her in Melbourne.
Wootton appeared before Judge Fred McElrea where he was given name suppression until 5pm today.
He has been let out on bail and is due back in court next month.
The phone number for Wootton's West Auckland legal practice listed with the law society was disconnected this afternoon and he was not able to be reached for comment.
Comeskey was suspended last year for nine months for professional misconduct for incorrect billing of a client and misleading the Court of Appeal.
