A man charged with murdering his teenage cousin after a fight in Poverty Bay has been released on bail after appearing in Gisborne District Court today.
Family members of Weylin Te Rau Aroha Ngarangione, 19, found his body at his family home in Manutuke, 13km southwest of Gisborne, about 9am Sunday.
Mr Ngarangione had been involved in a fight during a small party at his family home last Wednesday night, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott said.
The teenager was taken to Gisborne Hospital by ambulance, and treated for his head injury. He was discharged a few hours later.
As part of his bail condition, the man - who has name suppression - must stay outside out the district until his next court appearance on July 28, Newstalk ZB reported today.
