Boat found in search for missing fisherman

A boat which sank in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf has been found, but there is still no sign of the fisherman thought to have drowned after becoming separated from his four companions, who swam to shore.

Anthony Murray Preston, 41, of Warkworth, north of Auckland, has not been seen since the 6m aluminium boat sunk off Kawau Island about 6pm last Tuesday.

The others, including a 13-year-old boy, swam about 2km to Motuketekete Island, near Kawau Island, where they spent a chilly night before being rescued the following morning and flown to hospital.

Senior Sergeant Martin Paget, of the Auckland police maritime unit, told NZPA the boat had been found, submerged in 17 metre-deep water in Kawau Bay.

It was located when passing boatie spotted a rope, which was still attached to the vessel, and contacted police.

They lowered specialist cameras into the water and confirmed it was what they were looking for.

They were hauling it to the surface so it could be examined by Maritime New Zealand and police.

Mr Paget said the find substantially narrowed-down the search area and police divers from Wellington would scour the surrounding sea floor tomorrow.

Mr Paget said he didn't believe Mr Preston was still alive.
