Boy hit by car critical

A 5-year-old boy is in a critical condition with head injuries after he was hit by a car in south Auckland.

The child was struck on Manuroa Rd in Takanini at 8.45am.

The New Zealand Herald understands the boy was with an older sibling on his way to school when he was hit.

The road is closed while police investigate.

He ran across the road at a crossing that was unmanned. It was not a pedestrian crossing, rather part of the road with a pedestrian refuge in the middle.

The boy was hit close to 9am - too late for school patrols to still be out monitoring the crossing.
