Climber killed on Aoraki Mt Cook named

The family of a climber who died on Aoraki Mt Cook on Saturday say they are coming to terms with the fact he won't be home for Christmas.

Stuart Douglas Cargill Haslett, 28, was an experienced climber who had been living in Mt Cook village for the last three months.

He was a seasonal mountaineer and employed by the Department of Conservation as part of the Aoraki Alpine Rescue Team.

He was part of a group that left Plateau Hutt early on Saturday morning to climb the peak's east ridge.

Other members of the group raised the alarm about 7.30am when he fell on the north side as they traversed the ridge.

Canterbury Police Search and Rescue said the body of Mr Haslett was recovered from the mountain yesterday.

A family spokesperson said the family thanked everyone involved in the recovery of Mr Haslett's body.

In the statement the spokesperson asked for privacy "while we work through this tragic event and come to terms with the fact he is not coming home for Christmas."

A spokesperson for the Aoraki Alpine Rescue team said Mr Haslett was a valued member of the community.

"He was an experienced climber and much loved member of the team.

"He enjoyed spending time in the Southern Alps and was always professional, courteous and friendly no matter what the circumstances.

"He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Canterbury Rural Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said: "The recovery operation went as planned yesterday and despite cloud cover in the morning the climber and his belongings were recovered safely.

"While this is a tragic start to the climbing season in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, incidents such as these are very rare when experienced climbers are involved. Our thoughts are with Stuart's partner, family, friends and colleagues at this very sad and tragic time."

Ms Haslett's death had been referred to the coroner and police would continue to investigate the incident.
