Searches are continuing for a missing elderly woman in Christchurch, as concerns grow for her welfare.

Valerie Hargrave, 81,  left her Woolston home in the St John St area about 10.30am on Saturday and has not returned, police said in a statement.

She was wearing a pink cardigan, is about 167cm tall, and of small build.

Hargrave walks with a shuffle but is reasonably mobile, a police spokesperson said.

"Her family and police are very concerned about her wellbeing and are urgently seeking any information which will help us find her."

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie said today that concerns for her are growing.

“Given the time that has passed since confirmed sighting of Valerie, her family and police are growing increasingly concerned for her welfare.

“Police Search and Rescue are continuing work today to find Valerie, assisted by volunteers from LandSAR.”

Det Snr Sgt Baillie says it is not believed Valerie has travelled very far from the Woolston area and the public could help searchers.

“We’d ask the public to help us by checking in and around your properties, particularly in Woolston and the areas immediately surrounding.”

There would be an increased police presence in the Woolston area as officers made inquiries, he  said.

Police continue to assess information as it comes in from the public and remain in contact with the family.

"If you see anything that may help us in the search for Valerie, please contact police via 105, referencing file number 260606/1699."
