Passengers on board a cruise ship which rolled sharply in rough weather conditions last night will have to spend another night at sea.

The Pacific Sun was expected into Auckland this morning but severe weather is keeping it held about 540km northeast of New Zealand.

A P&O cruises spokesperson said 42 passengers received medical attention after the vessel rolled in seven metre swells and 50 knot winds at 8pm last night.

The Pacific Sun has two doctors and three nurses on board who are highly trained, the spokesperson said.

Passengers on board a cruise ship heading to Auckland needed medical treatment after it rolled sharply in rough seas last night.

The ship is carrying 1732 passengers and 671 crew and was on its return from an eight-day cruise in the South Pacific.
