Police have located the mother of a newborn girl whose body was found in a Hutt Valley backyard yesterday.
The woman in her early 20s was identified as the baby's mother as the result of an inspection of the area, said police.
"When located by police, this woman had not sought any medical attention. However, she has since been hospitalised this afternoon and is being treated for complications as a result of the birth," said Inspector Shane Cotter.
Inquiries into the circumstances of the baby's birth were continuing and a post-mortem examination would be carried out tomorrow.
