A dog that was sleeping on a chair inside his owners' house has been injured after a car crashed through the side of the home.

The driver of the vehicle crashed into the house around 11.30pm yesterday on the corner of Ruapehu St and Riwai St, Paraparaumu.

"During the crash, a person driving this vehicle lost control and crashed through the side of a house causing extensive damage to the address and injuring a dog that had been sleeping on a chair inside," police said in a statement.

"The driver of the vehicle left the scene and was not located.

"Police are following strong lines of enquiry to identify this person, however police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash or anyone else that may have information to assist with their enquiries."

Police are calling for anyone with information surrounding the crash to come forward.
