Drowned baby's family on CYF list

Regular advice on providing a safe home was given to the mother of a baby girl who drowned in the bath at her home.

Amber Lawson, 21, and her twin, 11-month-old daughters, Aimee and Ella Pool, were regularly visited by Child Youth and Family at their west Auckland home in Henderson, The New Zealand Herald reported today.

The mother's desperate efforts failed to save Aimee after she was found floating face down in the bath next to her twin sister last week. She died in Auckland's Starship Hospital on Sunday when life support systems were removed.

The two infants had been left in the bath briefly. Their mother returned to find Aimee floating, scooped her out of the water and gave rescue breathing until paramedics arrived.

Child Youth and Family general manager operations John Henderson said community support agencies, including CYF, had regularly visited the family and gave "advice and support on how to provide a safe and loving home".

The surviving infant had been placed in another home.

Police said their inquiries were continuing and it was too soon to say if charges would be laid.
