Five facing charges after hit and run

A further two men are appear in court today charged in relation to an alleged hit and run incident in which 16-year-old Jordan Herewini was killed in the Bay of Plenty forestry town of Murupara.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper said so far five people, all in their 30s or 40s, had been arrested in direct connection with the incident on January 27, and all but one faced two charges of aggravated burglary, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and participating in a criminal group.

On February 9 two men appeared in Rotorua District Court on four charges. One was charged with murder. Both were remanded in custody to appear on March 3.

On Friday, three more men were arrested and appeared in court on Saturday. One man, charged with participating in a criminal group, was remanded and bailed under strict conditions.

The other two, who face all four charges, were remanded in custody and were due to appear today.

Mr Loper said in the course of the investigation numerous weapons including baseball bats, axes, pipes and a Chinese-made Taser had been recovered, and three other people had been charged with drug related offences and belonging to a criminal group.
