Four die on roads at weekend

The weekend road toll has risen to four with the death of a man in Tauranga last night.

Inspector Matt Sillars, of Tauranga police, said the man's car was the only one involved in the 9.20pm crash, and he died at the scene.

Two others in the car were hurt but their injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Late yesterday morning, two people died in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 in South Waikato, between Putaruru and Tokoraa.

A man and woman from Tokoroa, who were both in the same car, died after their car crossed the centre line and hit a northbound 4WD.

The person in the 4WD was admitted to Tokoroa Hospital with moderate injuries.

On Saturday, one person died and two were injured after the car they were travelling in crashed into a power pole on Himatangi Beach Rd, Horowhenua.

The accident happened at 4.20pm about 1.5km from the intersection with State Highway 1, and did not involve any other vehicles.
