Four people have been injured, two seriously, in a two-car crash on State Highway 6 on the West Coast.
The crash happened in the Lower Buller Gorge about 11.15 today.
Two men, one in his 30s, suffered serious injuries and were flown by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital's emergency department, St John communication adviser Ian Henderson said.
The cars were travelling in opposite directions when they crashed near Fuschia Creek, Tasman District communications manager Barbara Dunn said.
Ms Dunn said the two people in the other car, a man and a woman, were able to walk away from the crash but were taken to Buller Hospital to be checked.
The NZCC Rescue Helicopter from Greymouth, and a second helicopter, as well as two fire trucks, three ambulances and a rapid response vehicle attended the crash.
A serious crash team was at the scene this afternoon and the road was expected to be closed until about 4pm. Road detours were in place.
