A bedside hospital court sitting for a man arrested for the armed robbery of a Chinese takeaway shop in Tokoroa has been put off until tomorrow, police say.
The 29-year-old man was arrested last night and charged with assault with intent to rob, commission of a crime with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.
His arrest follows the attempted robbery of the takeaway and restaurant at the Aotea shops just before 10pm on Monday.
During the robbery, the shop's owner, 25-year-old Zhuofeng "Titan" Jiang, wrestled the gun from the man and allegedly shot him in the leg.
Detective Sergeant Kevan Verry said the 29-year-old was arrested about 10pm last night and taken to Tokoroa Hospital before being transferred to Waikato Hospital in Hamilton about 1am today.
A special court hearing at his bedside was set to be held today, but Mr Verry said it had been put off until tomorrow.
"He's got to be in a position where he can follow what's happening, but he's currently lining up for surgery and may be under the influence of some medication because of that," he told NZPA.
A 30-year-old man charged with being an accessory after the fact appeared in Tokoroa District Court today. He entered no plea and was remanded on bail.
Mr Verry said Mr Jiang and the other shop staff were shaken by the attempted robbery and feeling a bit scared after what happened to them.
Mr Jiang, 25, told The Dominion Post he shot the robber in the leg to prevent being attacked.
He said he was not scared and would do it again.
"I hate these people. I will never give them any money."
