Jump stunt goes wrong for teen in Timaru

A teenager is lucky to be alive this morning, after a Superman-style stunt went wrong in Timaru.

He was trying to jump between two buildings, but ended up falling nine metres and breaking his leg.

The Fire Service arrived to find an ambulance crew, and the youth stuck in a crack, Timaru firefighter Kevin Donaldson said.

It took 13 firefighters, two ambulance crew and a couple of policemen to release him.

The extraction was the most technically difficult rescue Mr Donaldson had ever been involved in, he said.

Aerial equipment and a stretcher was needed to haul the youth free, because the gap was too small to get at him from the ground.

The teen had apparently missed his jump and fell into a tight cavity, where he lay injured.
