A 30-year-old was critically ill in Auckland's Middlemore Hospital today after being attacked by a driver wielding a patu - a traditional Maori club.
The man was hit several times after he confronted a group of people doing burnouts on his street outside his home in Port Waikato on the west coast south west of Auckland yesterday.
He was flown to Middlemore Hospital.
Police said there were grave concerns for his safety after he was hit on the head and the chest, the New Zealand Herald reported today.
A patu is a hand-held club, carved from bone, wood, or stone.
Police were called to the address two days ago when a resident had complained a group of people was doing burnouts outside the property.
The attackers sped off towards Tuakau and police later took a man into custody.
