Mother of baby with fractured skull in court

The mother of a five-month-old Nelson baby boy who suffered a fractured skull and severe brain damage over Labour Weekend appeared in court yesterday.

In Nelson District Court, Cassandra Albert, 21, of Motueka, entered no pleas to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and failing to supply the necessaries of life.

She was remanded on bail to reappear on December 19, police said.

The boy's 30-year-old father, also from Motueka, is due to appear in court tomorrow facing the same charges.

The couple took the child -- then 17 weeks old -- to Nelson Hospital on October 27.

He was transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital, spending more than week in intensive care before returning to Nelson Hospital.

At the time police said the boy was improving, but the extent of his injuries would not be known until he failed to reach certain developmental milestones.
