About 1000 mourners filed into the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua today to farewell Sergeant Derek Wootton.

Mr Wootton was killed last week in the line of duty when struck by a stolen car in Titahi Bay near Porirua.

Father Pene Patelesio will preside over today's service, starting at 1.30pm.

Family, friends and colleagues of Mr Wootton entered the college's gymnasium to a collection of Beatles music.

Close family members are due to bring Mr Wootton's casket into the hall, and it will be draped with the New Zealand police flag and the police helmet he was issued with when he graduated as an officer in 1994.

Police Minister Annette King and Labour MP Winne Laban were among today's mourners.

Police Commissioner Howard Broad and area commander for Kapiti-Mana, John Spence, will be among those paying tribute to Mr Wootton.
