Movember back with new face

Movember is changing face. After parting ways with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Movember Foundation will benefit the Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation's Out of the Blue Campaign this November, foundation chief executive Adam Gurone said.

On November 1, participating men, called Mo Bros, start with a clean shaven face, then grow the best moustache they can during the month. They get people to pledge to give donations for their efforts.

Movember originated in Australia in 2004 to raise awareness and money for men's health issues.

It was launched in New Zealand in 2006.

Ex-patriate New Zealanders have contacted Mr Gurone wanted the campaign to go global. It has recently been launched it in the United States, Canada, Britain, Ireland and Spain.

The first two Novembers raised more than $3 million for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

But the foundation did not come up with any ideas when it was asked what it would do if it it was given the money raised from this year's events, Mr Gurone said.

The Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation did.

"The Cancer Society of New Zealand currently funds some great research into prostate cancer and they came back and said this research is significantly underfunded, and we would spend any money you raise us on this research," he said.

The Movember Foundation decided to split proceeds between prostate cancer and depression causes this year, because it has worked well in Australia for the past few years.

The target this November would be to beat the $2.2 million raised and 28,000 moustaches grown last year.

"We would be happy to get 30,000 Mo Bros in New Zealand," Mr Gurone said.

"Out of all the countries per capita, Kiwi men have embraced it far more than any other country."
