An elderly woman has died following a head-on vehicle collision south of Wanganui this afternoon.
Central Police Communications Senior Sergeant Marc Clausen said the crash occurred around 2.30pm on State Highway 3, around 10 kilometres south of Wanganui when a car driven by the elderly female crashed head on with a van.
She was transported to Whanganui Base Hospital in a critical condition but has since died, Mr Clausen said.
The male driver of the van was in a serious condition and was being treated at the same hospital.
The cause of the crash was not yet known and would be investigated by the Serious Crash Unit, Mr Clausen said.
The road was currently closed while the scene was cleared and the Serious Crash Unit carried out a preliminary scene examination.
Diversions were in place at the Wanganui end of the No 2 Line and down Warrengate Rd at the southern end.
Police were hoping to clear the road before 5pm.
