Zion Wildlife Park in Whangarei has pleaded guilty to failing to protect one of its workers who was mauled to death by a tiger in 2009.

Dalu Mncube, 26, died in May 2009 after being attacked by the 260kg white tiger as he cleaned its enclosure at the park.

The Department of Labour laid charges under the Health and Safety Act for failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees while at work and failing to ensure that no hazard harms people lawfully at work.

The park pleaded guilty to both charges in Whangarei District Court today.

It will be sentenced next month.
