A microlight pilot walked away with only facial injuries after a crash landing due to engine failure in the Waiatoto River valley, near Haast, just after 7 o'clock last night.
The Rescue Co-ordination Centre was alerted to the accident after the pilot activated his personal locator beacon.
A spokeswoman said the pilot's wife arranged for a private helicopter to locate the crashed machine, ferrying him back to the medical centre at Hannahs Clearing.
"Apparently she knew where her husband had crash landed," the spokeswoman said.
