John Gerraty, 55, who suffers from epilepsy and other medical conditions was last seen in the Clouston Park area of Upper Hutt about 4pm last Thursday.
He moves with a severe limp and is blind in one eye.
Senior Sergeant Nick Brown of Upper Hutt police told NZPA today they were interviewing people in relation to possible sightings of Mr Gerraty.
He said many Upper Hutt shopkeepers had put his photo up in their stores.
"It's triggering people's minds."
Mr Brown said the case would end up in one of two courts.
"It'll either end up in the criminal court because somebody's done something to him that we don't know about, or probably more likely the coroner's court."
