Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford have introduced a bill to ban social media for under-16s. 

National’s coalition partners in government, ACT and NZ First, have distanced themselves from the proposal, while Labour is yet to commit to a position until more details are revealed and the caucus can discuss it. 

A Dunedin principal has voiced his support for a ban as a step in the right direction, but warned it was meaningless without a broader understanding of the risks of online platforms to young people.
