Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford have introduced a bill to ban social media for under-16s.
National’s coalition partners in government, Act and NZ First, have distanced themselves from the proposal, while Labour on Tuesday said it would support the bill through its first reading, and called on the government to send it to select committee before the election.
A Dunedin principal has voiced his support for a ban as a step in the right direction, but warned it was meaningless without a broader understanding of the risks of online platforms to young people.
Have your say in the poll below, and we’ll publish the results later in the week.
