A prominent New Zealand musician has been charged with assault and using threatening language.

The man appeared in Manukau District Court on Friday morning on two charges of common assault and one of using threatening language.

It was his first appearance.

He has been granted name suppression.

The man's next appearance was scheduled for next month in the Queenstown District Court.
