SH1 opens south of Kaikoura as slip closes another highway

State Highway 1 has re-opened to traffic after being closed south of Kaikoura for the past two days because of a large slip.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said contractors had managed to clear enough of the slip to permanently open one lane of the highway.

The road was opened for brief periods throughout today.

NZTA said there were still several slips in the Kaikoura region and urged motorists to drive with care.

Meanwhile, further rain throughout the North Island brought down a slip which closed State Highway 43 south of Taumarunui this afternoon.

A slip also temporarily closed the road through the Manawatu Gorge.
