Sleeping driver faces charges

A Blenheim man's morning went from bad to worse yesterday after he was found drunk and asleep at the wheel of his car.

Blenheim police said the 27-year-old returned a breath-alcohol reading over twice the legal limit when found in Spring Creek, north of the town, about 1am.

Police impounded his car as it was his third such offence in four years.

In less than an hour he returned home and allegedly had a domestic bust-up, for which he now faces a wilful damage charge.

Earlier in the day a teenager was left with spinal and abdominal injuries after being thrown from a car in Blenheim's High St.

Police said he was trying to get into the car when the 15-year-old driver accelerated away, throwing him on to the road.

The victim ended up in hospital, while the learner driver faces charges over the incident.
