String of accidents on country's roads

Six people are in hospital after a string of serious crashes this weekend.

A 3-year-old child is still in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Hospital after a car rolled on Kaipara Coast Highway yesterday.

Two 15-month-old twins were also in the car, along with their mother and another woman.

One of the twins remained in hospital today in a stable condition.

The other twin and the two women were not admitted to hospital.

A witness to the crash told the Herald on Sunday he saw the car weave across the centre line before zig-zagging down the road and rolling over.

He said the crash happened on a straight stretch of road, and police said the roads were not busy at the time.

The serious crash unit was still investigating today and police were unable to give any further details.

Meanwhile, two solo speedway riders were taken to hospital this afternoon after two separate crashes at Auckland's Rosebank Speedway.

On the second round of the Elf/Sunday News International Speedway Series rider Chris Mills hit a wall and was taken to hospital with back injuries.

Today was only Mills' fourth race after recovering from a serious crash at Foxhall Stadium in England last September.

That crash left him with broken ribs and severe internal bleeding.

Dale Finch crashed into a wall on the first corner in today's third round, causing Andrew Aldridge to clip Finch's front wheel and crash.

Rosebank Speedway club captain Hayden Allen said Aldridge was taken to hospital while Finch walked away without serious injury.

"From what I hear [Aldridge] was laughing and joking in the ambulance," said Allen.

"He seems to have a sore lower back but he's moving everything."

Aldridge was taken into hospital for x-rays as a precaution, he said.

St John's confirmed two riders were taken to Auckland Hospital with moderate injuries. The men were likely to be discharged later today.

In Nelson, a motorcyclist is in a stable condition in intensive care after an accident on the Whangamoa Saddle.

The 56-year-old man was airlifted to Nelson Hospital after he hit a bank near the summit of the Whangamoas around 3.30pm.

Acting Senior Sergeant Steffan James said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.

"He failed to take a left-hand turn and narrowly missed a vehicle coming from the other direction," said Mr James.

Police had spoken to the driver of the car.

In Auckland, a heavily pregnant woman is also in a stable condition in Auckland Hospital after crashing into a streetlight.

Marcia Trembath was travelling on Auckland's Northwestern Motorway yesterday when her car skidded into the streetlight around 10am. The streetlight then fell on the car, narrowly missing her two children, aged 2 and 4.

Her partner Dean Delaney told the Herald on Sunday she had a fractured spine but there were no known injuries to their unborn baby.

"She is 35 weeks [pregnant], and that is looking okay still," Delaney said.
