Student charged with private school arson

A student from a top private school on Auckland's North Shore will be back in court next week on a charge of arson after two classrooms were damaged.

Blake Norcross, 17, made his first appearance in the North Shore District Court on October 23. He was granted bail and remanded to appear again next week, the New Zealand Herald reported today.

Norcross was one of several current and former students who gathered at Kristin School before a fire broke out.

The school said three male students faced disciplinary action and left the school before they were expelled or withdrawn.

A school spokesman said he did not believe the students intended to set fire to the classrooms, but "they foolishly lit a few things and it got out of control".

Firefighters arrived at the school about 4.15am on October 11. Two rooms were on fire and fire safety officer Gary Beer said the blaze appeared to have started in a couple of rubbish bins.
