Tender for removal of 'Rena' issued

The owners of the Rena have issued a tender for the removal of the wreck from Astrolabe Reef.

Salvage company Svitzer has now completed its part of the operation and is pulling out.

But the wreck continues to be monitored by container recovery company Braemar.

It's also continuing work on recovering the Rena's containers.

Nine hundred and 40 have so far been taken ashore - including a number recovered from the sea bed by divers using a decompression chamber and specialised equipment.

More containers in less than 50 metres of water will be lifted off the seabed over coming weeks.

Debris is also still being recovered from beaches in Bay of Plenty and Coromandel.
