Travel disrupted as fog blankets Auckland

Fog has rolled back into Auckland Airport, cancelling or delaying about 40 flights.

Thick fog continues to blanket city on Friday morning, causing major travel disruption in the air, on the water and on city roads.

Fog restrictions were lifted at Auckland Airport just before 7.30am after 25 flights were delayed and cancelled, but reimposed just after 8.40am.

It has now led to the cancellation of 22 domestic flights. Another 17 have been delayed. A Qantas flight from Melbourne was earlier diverted to Wellington.

Motorists were being warned to take care as the murky conditions cloak the city's streets and motorways, drastically reducing visibility.

The Skytower had disappeared from the skyline and Niwa said people could see no further than 100m in some parts of the city.

Ferry services have been disrupted and Auckland Transport was warning people to expect delays heading to work this morning.

Auckland Airport also warned passengers to expect delays and cancellations. It advised those flying to check the airport website for latest arrival and departure updates.
