Two reported dead in Canterbury crash

Two people are reportedly dead after a car and truck crashed in North Canterbury this morning.

The car is so badly smashed that police cannot say how many people were in the vehicle, but Fairfax is reporting two people have died.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash, which happened about 8am, on Mouse Point Rd in Culverden.

Senior Sergeant Paul Reeves said because of the severity of the crash police were still working out how many people were in the car.

The truck driver was not injured.

The road is closed and diversions are in place at State Highway 7 and Flintoft Rd, and SH7 and Rotherham Rd.

Snr Sgt Reeves said the diversions were likely to remain in place until at least 1pm.

"Motorists are being asked to avoid the area or delay travel, if possible.''

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
