USA judge rules in family business battle

An American judge has awarded $US26 million ($NZ36.8 million) to the son and brother of the two main directors in an Auckland snack business, Jack Links NZ Ltd.

The directors, John "Jack" Link and his son Troy, have been caught up in a legal battle with Troy's older brother Jay over the value of his share in the Auckland production plant and two factories in Wisconsin and South Dakota, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Washburn County Circuit judge Eugene Harrington awarded $US26 million today to Jay Link, who was ousted as chief operations officer from Link Snacks three years ago.

It was considerably less than the initial $US35 million he rejected at the time.

The two-month case revolved around a power struggle between the older son and his father and brother and was initiated by Jack and Troy Link when they tried to enforce a buy-sell agreement Jay Link signed in the mid 1990s as the company scored a major success making beefjerky.
