Woman dead, man hurt in suspected shooting

A woman has died and a man is injured following a suspected shooting incident in Napier.

The body was discovered at a house in the city after the Armed Offenders Squad were called out about 9pm last night to reports that someone had died at the address.

Road blocks were set up around the property, but a man alleged to have been involved had already left, reportedly carrying a firearm, police said.

Further road blocks were set up in the Hastings and Clive areas, and a man believed to be linked to the Napier incident was arrested in Clive about 11.10pm.

It was believed he had been shot, and was last night being treated at Hawke's Bay Hospital, Eastern District Commander Superintendent Sandra Venables said in a statement.

It was a "fast moving incident", she said.

State Highway 2 through the main street of Clive was closed off last night, and would remain closed to the public for most of the day, police said, to enable a scene examination to take place.

Diversions are in place and motorists asked to use alternative routes, including Farndon Rd and the Hawke's Bay Expressway.
