Woman killed in rockfall named

A 44-year-old woman who was killed taking the family dogs for a winter walk along an Auckland beach yesterday has been named by police.

She was Inna Viktorovna Rudyy, of Murrays Bay.

Ms Rudyy was found on the beach under cliffs at Rothesay Bay, on Auckland's North Shore, after being hit by falling rocks, police say.

It was initially thought she had fallen from the cliffs while walking her two dogs but police later established she was hit by rocks.

Ms Rudyy was thought to have died instantly but her dogs were later found unharmed.

Police visited her North Shore home to break the news to her husband and family, Waitemata police communications spokesman Kevin Loughlin said.

Auckland Council engineers and geotechnicians are examining the area and have recommended people stay away from the base of the cliffs as a precaution.

Warning sign have been erected warning of the danger.

Locals believe a 2.9-magnitude tremor which shook Auckland on Friday night had undermined the already unstable Rothesay Bay cliffs and caused the rockface to crumble.

Dog owner Penny Millen told the Herald on Sunday there was a fresh rock slip on the track yesterday morning, which she attributed to the previous evening's tremor.

"Lots of big boulders have fallen away from the cliff."

Ms Rudyy's death has been referred to the coroner.
