Flames rise as firefighters battle the Gifford fire in brush-covered hillsides west of New Cuyama, California, yesterday.

The fire, which began on Saturday, has so far burnt about 30,000ha, but is only 3% contained, according to Cal Fire.

More than 1000 firefighters are battling the blaze.
