Kiwi arrested after scaling Sydney Opera House

A "sheepish" New Zealander will face charges in court after climbing the Sydney Opera House.

Police said the man climbed the iconic building after being dared by his friends and there was no evidence to suggest the act was politically motivated, Sydney's Sunday Telegraph reported.

The man was arrested when he came down on his own after police were alerted by Opera House security officers.

The man climbed up without ropes or safety equipment and looked like he could have fallen at any moment, The Rocks police duty manager Scott Willis told the newspaper said.

"He was a bit remorseful for his actions. He was looking very sheepish when his friends were still around and he got carted off," Mr Willis said.

"I haven't seen anything like this before. Usually it's politically motivated but this was just a prank that clearly did not work out too well for him," he said.

The man will face trespass charges when he appears in court on November 2.
