UK pledges $NZ355m to fight Afghan roadside bombs

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that Britain will invest 150 million pounds ($NZ355 million) to tackle roadside bombs in Afghanistan.

In a statement read out to lawmakers, Brown promised to spend an extra £50 million each year over the next three years on equipment and training aimed at countering the explosive devices.

Brown told the House of Commons that Afghan forces will be better trained to detect and disable the bombs.

He said efforts will be made to improve intelligence gathering from Afghan civilians about those planning the attacks.

He said  the investment will also include money for buying new hand-held mine detectors.
