Drone training comes to Dunedin

Aviation Safety Management Systems Ltd is coming to Dunedin on the 28th and 29th of August 2018 to offer a UAS Pilot Certificate course for Drone operations.

Aviation Safety Management Systems Ltd (ASMS) is a Part 141 Certificated Aviation Training Organisation. They are approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to conduct flight crew training and assess operational competency for unmanned aircraft operations.

Under the Civil Aviation Rules a qualification such as the UAS Pilot Certificate is essential for flying within 4km of an aerodrome. For those drone operators that want to achieve certification under Part 102 of the civil aviation rules, CAA requires that your pilots hold a Pilot Certificate.

This is a two day course which covers the aviation law to provide the knowledge necessary to satisfy the requirement under the civil aviation rules that a person operating any unmanned aircraft must be aware of the classification of the airspace that they are operating in and any restrictions that may apply. The theory course includes the following topics: understanding airspace classifications and aviation maps; operating in the vicinity of aerodromes; the requirements in Part 101 for the operation of unmanned aircraft; aviation weather; hazard minimisation; human factors issues; and aviation radio awareness.

The course also includes an operational competency assessment or flight test which is designed to assess the ability of the pilot.

While ASMS is in Dunedin you can also book in for 'lessons only' to learn how to operate your drone safely. They can also customise a training package suitable to your ability for example you can sit the theory component of the course to learn the aviation rules to keep yourself compliant and have a flight lesson if you do not think that the full course is for you.
