Union rally outside Rialto Dunedin

Unite union, Unions Otago members, and other supporters held a rally outside Rialto Dunedin from 7pm last night, to show support for cinema workers in Dunedin and across New Zealand being paid a fairer wage.

Negotiations over the collective employment agreement reached an impasse after the Australian-owned parent company for Rialto, Events Cinema, refused to pay workers' wage increases in line with the minimum wage.

With the minimum wage going up, many employees in New Zealand who were paid above the minimum wage are seeing their wages getting compressed. Cinema workers have been striking in Events-owned cinemas around the country.

Dunedin cinema-goers and other members of the public showed great support for the rally last night, tooting horns and joining in with the rally.

Unite asks that people continue to tell Rialto employees that you support them being paid a fairer wage, and boycott the Rialto snack bar until the employer comes to the bargaining table with a fairer offer.
