New show for big cars

More than 200 American vehicles could be cruising Oamaru streets in February when the inaugural "Oamerican" Car Show arrives in town.

Organised in conjunction with the Weston Progress League by American car owners Jayne Jackson, Barry Sinclair and Wayne Sinclair, the four-day event is expected to attract American vehicles from throughout New Zealand, plus some from overseas.

Under the partnership with the progress league, proceeds from the show on February 9 to 12 will go back into the community.

An English American car fan has already registered for the event and Ms Jackson has had "strong inquiries" from North Island owners and clubs.

The show, which could become an annual event, had the potential to attract more than 500 participants, a big boost for the town, she said.

It is open to any American vehicle, from classics to moderns and including hot rods.

Ms Jackson and the other two organisers came up with the idea after attending the "Americana" event in Invercargill in March. That event alternates between the North and South Islands.

The event will include a cruise around Oamaru and Weston, a run up the Waitaki Valley to Omarama and return, a street party and a "show and shine" event.
