At the request of the Waitati Hall committee, artist Bruce Mahalski painted a mural on the hall car park wall.
The mural represents the wildlife of the area, residents of Orokonui Ecosanctuary, and the hospitable nature of Waitati.
Against a salmon-coloured background, kiwis walk, kereru perch, and birds and teapots fly in the artwork which has been dubbed "Murial" by local residents.
A smaller work, depicting a friendly kiwi with a cup of tea, greets visitors just inside the building entrance.
The mural project was completed just before Christmas. It was supported by the Waikouaiti coast Community Board and Keep Dunedin Beautiful.
After completing the Waitati Hall mural, Mahalski went on to further add to the Waitati public art collection with a monochrome design of a tuatara on the wall of the tennis court and skatepark at Bland Park.
The giant tuatara, which can be seen sunning itself on the tennis court, adds interest to what had previously been a blank wall.
At last week’s Waikouaiti Coast Community Board meeting, the board voted unanimously to grant $300 for the cost of the paint and labour for the tuatara mural.
