Ten fire appliances and tankers and two helicopters tackled the fire, which was on a property being cleared of radiata pine forest.
It started in heaps of pine branches but spread into a small pine plantation just after noon.
Strong winds buffeting parts of the South reignited the smouldering piles of forest debris in a recently logged area, blowing sparks in to the neighbouring pinus radiata forest plantation.
