South Korean violinist Hyein Koo performs during a quarterfinal round of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition at the Queenstown Memorial Centre yesterday.

She is one of 16 of the world’s best 18 to 26-year-old violinists taking part in New Zealand’s most prestigious classical music competition.

Held every three years, the competition is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a gala dinner, and a concert by two of the judges, at the same venue tonight.

The quarterfinal rounds, which started yesterday, will continue until Monday.

The judges will then select six competitors to move on to the semifinals in Auckland, from which the top three will perform in the final with the Auckland Philharmonia next Saturday.

The competition was founded by Sir Michael Hill in 2001.

The Arrowtown-based jeweller died last July, aged 86, but Sir Michael’s family, through the Hill Family Foundation for Arts and Music, has reconfirmed its sponsorship for the next competition in 2029.

The quarterfinal rounds continue at the Queenstown Memorial Centre today, tomorrow and Monday, at 10am and 2pm.
