The information centre moved to Whitestone City in Oamaru’s Harbour St last month. It was previously operated by Tourism Waitaki in the council-owned building at the corner of Itchen and Thames Sts.
The centre and heritage attraction Whitestone City are now co-ordinated by Ms Lewis and run by the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust.
Ms Lewis said she hoped it would become an "interpretive centre" to provide a friendly introduction to Oamaru while teaching visitors about the town’s history and answering questions.
Over Labour Weekend, a total of 462 visitors walked through the doors of the new centre.
"We really want this area to be like a hub," she said.
The information centre service will be open every day from 10am to 4pm, and Whitestone City will be open at the weekends during the same hours.
Having the information centre open every day added more life to the Victorian precinct area, Ms Lewis said.
It would adapt to the needs of visitors while playing a "long game" in providing information and encouraging visitors to come back, she said.
So far, the centre had relied on "word of mouth" and foot traffic to attract its visitors, and was working with the Waitaki District Council to create signage.
Work was also being done to update the centre’s online presence to direct visitors to the new space.
