Racing: Filly back to form

It has taken most of the season, but Bootie Bromac has finally gained her first win as a 3yr-old.

The McArdle filly was up and running as a 2yr-old, winning two juvenile races during her debut season.

The handicapping concessions for 2yr-olds meant she began this season in the maiden grade and punters expected her to win in short order.

But her tidy win by a neck over Blazing Bracelet at Oamaru on Sunday was her eighth start for the season, after burning punters in her seven other outings.

Four times this season she went on to the track as second favourite but finished 12th, 10th, fifth and ninth respectively.

Branxholme trainer-driver Kirk Larsen feels he has finally figured Bootie Bromac out.

''She's just starting to settle a bit now and I can get her racing a lot kinder,'' Larsen said.

''I changed her headgear around and she's a different horse.

''She's always had the ability, but she's her own worst enemy.''

Larsen also opted to settle in the midfield with Bootie Bromac on Sunday, especially with some moisture around.

''She could have gone forward today but last time she went forward on a wet track they eyeballed her and she just folded,'' he said.

''So I thought we'd try her in behind if we could - she can finish home well.''

Larsen notched up his first training double at Oamaru on Sunday when Risk Factor won, after four previous successes there as a trainer.

His first win on the track was with Franco Jeb in February 1994, before collecting wins at the Hannon Memorial meetings in 2004, 2007 and 2009.

Risk Factor made a late start to the season, having his first run in March, but the win at Oamaru was his second in eight starts this campaign.

''We'll see whether to keep going for a wee bit longer. But he's going good, so there's no reason to be backing off yet.

''He's still only a c1 [graded] horse.''
